Lead magnet: meaning and examples

A lead magnet is a free, useful item, usually a short download such as a checklist, a sample chapter or a single preset, that someone receives in exchange for their email address. It lets a creator stay in touch with interested followers who are not yet ready to buy, so they can be told about future products directly.

What makes a good lead magnet

The best lead magnets are small, specific and quick to use. A one-page checklist that solves a real problem today beats a 60-page ebook nobody finishes. It should also relate closely to what you sell, so the people who claim it are the people likely to buy next.

Good examples for creators:

  • A single Lightroom preset from a paid pack.
  • The first chapter of a novel.
  • A five-day meal plan from a four-week plan.
  • A Notion weekly review template.
  • Three colouring pages from a full book.
  • A free kit of drum one-shots.

How it leads to sales

Most followers will not buy the first time they see a product. A lead magnet gives them a reason to share an email address anyway. When you launch something new, you can tell them directly, without hoping the algorithm shows them your post. Many creators find that a large share of launch-day buyers come from people who first claimed something free.

Put the lead magnet first on your store, mention it at the end of posts, and inside the file point to your paid product with a short note on what it adds.

A lead magnet is one of the three product types. It is always free: the visitor types their email address and the file arrives in their inbox, with a download button on the page too. Keep to the rules on consent in your country when you later send marketing to those addresses.
