Sell printables that look as good on paper as on screen

Printables are files the buyer prints at home or at a print shop: planners, worksheets, colouring pages, wall art, recipe cards, party invitations, chore charts. They are low-priced and quick to buy, which makes them a natural fit for a bio link, and they sell well in bundles.

What printables do people buy?

People buy printables that organise a part of life or decorate a space. Planners, trackers and worksheets solve a recurring need; wall art and party kits solve a moment. Teachers, parents, students and small business owners are the biggest buyers, and they often come back for matching sets once the first one works.

Ideas that sell from a creator's store:

  • Planners and trackers: weekly planners, habit trackers, meal planners, budget sheets, reading logs.
  • Worksheets: phonics practice, maths drills, journaling prompts, therapy-style reflection pages.
  • Wall art: quotes, botanical prints, nursery prints, city maps, in standard frame sizes.
  • Kids and family: colouring pages, reward charts, lunchbox notes, activity packs for car journeys.
  • Events: invitations, place cards, games and signs for birthdays, showers and weddings.

What size and format should printables be?

Deliver print-ready PDFs at 300 DPI, in both A4 and US Letter if you sell internationally. A4 (210 by 297 mm) is standard in the UK, Europe and most of the world; US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches) is used in the US and Canada. Including both stops the most common complaint: pages that print with cut-off edges.

Getting files print-ready:

  1. Keep text and key artwork at least 5 mm from every edge, because home printers cannot print to the edge.
  2. Export as PDF at 300 DPI; flatten transparency and embed fonts.
  3. For wall art, include standard frame sizes: 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14 inches, and A5, A4 and A3, plus a JPG of each for photo-printing services.
  4. Make planners fillable if you can, so buyers can type into them on a tablet too.
  5. Put the files in folders by size, zip them, and add a one-page printing guide recommending paper weight and printer settings.

A printable bundle with two paper sizes and several frame sizes can reach 100 MB or more; stall.bio accepts up to 500 MB per product.

How should I price printables?

Printables sell on volume at low prices: single pages at £2 to £5, sets of 10 to 30 pages at £5 to £12, and large bundles at £12 to £25. Because each sale is small, bundles and order bumps matter more here than with any other product type.

Watch the fixed part of Stripe's fee at low prices. On a £3 printable, the £0.20 fixed fee is a large share, and you keep £2.75. On a £9 bundle you keep £8.66. That is why "the whole set for £9" usually earns more than single pages at £3, and why a £3 add-on works best as a bump on a larger order, where no second fixed fee applies.

Is VAT due on printables?

Yes, at the standard rate if you are VAT registered. Unlike e-books, printable planners, diaries, colouring pages and wall art are not treated as e-publications, so they do not get the zero rate. If you are under the £90,000 UK threshold and not registered, you charge no VAT at all.

stall.bio applies one rate to your store. If you sell both ebooks and printables while VAT registered, ask an accountant how to set that up, because the two can be taxed differently.

How do I photograph printables for my store?

Show the printable in use, not as a flat file. Print it, fill it in, pin it on a fridge or frame it, and take a photo in daylight. Buyers need to see the scale and imagine it in their home or classroom. A mock-up made in Canva works if you cannot print, but a real photo builds more trust.

Your cover appears as a small square on your store, so make one page the hero: the most colourful or most useful one. In the product description, list every page in the set and both paper sizes, so buyers know exactly what prints out.

Example: a teacher sells classroom worksheets

Ellie is a primary teacher who shares classroom ideas on Instagram. Her store:

  • Free lead magnet: a five-page phonics sampler, A4 and US Letter.
  • "Phonics Phase 3 Pack": 40 worksheets at £8, with a subtitle of "40 pages · A4 and US Letter · answer sheets".
  • Order bump: matching flashcards at £3.
  • Back-to-school code: SEPT20 for 20% off, valid for the first two weeks of September.

Her cover is a photo of a worksheet half completed in pencil on a classroom desk. She adds a review from a parent who used it at home. Ellie is a made-up example.

Printables checklist

Before you publish:

  • Every page exported as a 300 DPI PDF with fonts embedded.
  • A4 and US Letter versions included, or the size stated clearly.
  • Text and artwork at least 5 mm from every edge.
  • A test print on a home printer, checked for cut-off edges.
  • Wall art includes standard frame sizes and JPGs.
  • Files sorted into folders by size and zipped.
  • A one-page printing guide added.
  • The cover photo shows the printable in use.
  • Description lists every page and both sizes.
  • A bundle and a low-priced bump planned, so small sales add up.
  • Licence states personal or classroom use only, no reselling.

Questions, answered

Can buyers print my files more than once?

Yes, and they will expect to. A printable is bought once and printed as often as the buyer needs for their own home or classroom. Your licence should say so, and also say that printing copies to sell or give away to others is not allowed.

Should I sell editable printables?

Editable versions are worth offering for invitations, labels and planners, where buyers want their own names and dates. Fillable PDFs work in free PDF readers; Canva template links suit buyers who want to change colours and fonts. You can sell the editable version as an order bump.

Why do my printables print with cut-off edges?

Usually because the paper size does not match, or artwork runs too close to the edge. Offer A4 and US Letter, keep a 5 mm margin, and tell buyers in your printing guide to pick the matching paper size and print at 100% so the margins you designed are kept.
