Conversion rate: what it is and how to raise it

A conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take the action you want, such as buying a product or claiming a free download. You work it out by dividing the number of people who took the action by the number who visited, then multiplying by 100. It shows how well a page turns interest into results.

Working it out

If 400 people tap your bio link in a week and 12 of them buy, your conversion rate is 12 ÷ 400 × 100 = 3%. Measure each step separately where you can: profile visits to link taps, link taps to product views, product views to orders. The weakest step is where to focus.

For a bio link store, the visitor count can come from your social app's insights, which on professional accounts show link taps, and orders from your Stripe account, which lists every payment.

What is typical

There is no single good number, because it depends on price, audience and how warm visitors are. As a rough guide, free lead magnets often convert a much higher share of visitors than paid products, and low-priced products convert better than expensive ones. Compare yourself with your own past weeks rather than with other people's claims.

How to raise it

Most gains come from removing doubt and steps:

  • Keep checkout on the page. Each redirect loses buyers, especially on mobile.
  • Offer wallets. Apple Pay and Google Pay turn payment into one tap.
  • Show proof. Reviews from real buyers answer "is this any good?"
  • Make the outcome clear. Say what the buyer gets in the product name and subtitle.
  • Give a reason to act now. A "was" price with a countdown during a launch.

Change one thing at a time and give it a week, so you know what made the difference. A store converting 3% of 1,000 monthly visitors at £15 makes £450; lifting that to 4% adds £150 a month with the same audience.
