Stripe Connect, explained

Stripe Connect is the part of Stripe that lets a platform, such as a store builder or marketplace, take payments on behalf of the businesses using it. With a Standard account, the money goes into the seller's own Stripe account, the seller is named on the receipt, and they manage payouts and refunds in their own Stripe dashboard.

How it works for a creator

When you connect Stripe to a platform, you either create a new Stripe account or link one you already have. Stripe checks your identity and bank details, as it would for any business. After that, the platform can start payments in your account without ever holding your money.

With direct charges, the payment is made on your account itself. You appear as the seller on the buyer's statement and receipt, Stripe pays out to your bank on its usual schedule, and refunds and disputes are handled by you, in your dashboard.

Standard, Express and Custom

Connect offers different account types. Standard accounts are full Stripe accounts the seller controls and can use anywhere, independent of the platform. Express and Custom accounts are managed more closely by the platform, which suits marketplaces that want to control payouts. For creators, a Standard account means your payment history and customers stay yours if you ever leave a platform.

Who pays which fees

Stripe charges its processing fee on each payment, taken from the payment before it reaches your balance. For a UK card that is 1.5% plus £0.20. A platform may also take an application fee from each payment through Connect.

stall.bio connects through Standard accounts with direct charges and takes no application fee, so the only deduction from a sale is Stripe's own fee. A £20 sale on a UK card leaves £19.50 in your balance.
